Student Loan Default, etc.

Fucking Internet.

I've got a few things that I wanted to say, starting with: Fucking internet!

I did some packing today. Pretty much got 1/2 of my regular wardrobe and 1/2 of my semi-nice, skirty-type wardrobe into that suitcase I bought. So happy and proud that I can cram a whole lot of shit into a small area. Don't read that twice, it sounds nasty.

I wanted to say something about my student loans, because I figure I'm probably not the only one with student loans in default. As I'm pretty much done worrying about that girl from the phone in Tampa (because apparently it's headed for New Orleans :(, instead), I can now say them without guilt.

First off, if you've got a student loan in de-something (meaning you can't pay on it, it's just sitting around making your credit flash red at people who will deny you things, because your credit is poor) you should fix it. Mainly because it will make your head hurt like mine does, when I think about how much I would like to be able to say I've got ok credit.

Step #1, according to TBL(TampaBayLady) is to call the Department of Education here: 1-800-872-5327. You talk to the person who answers, and ask them for something called "Rehabilitation".

(She said it's all you really need to say, other than giving them your info. Because it's the "Magic Word". Just like I say at work, lol. That's beside the point.)

Once you're Rehabilitated, you cut a deal with them, telling them how much you can afford to pay per month. Quite like buying a car, I think. Except without all the cool CD player gizmos.

Then, you pay that monthly payment on time for 12 consecutive months.

After that, you end up being not-in-default anymore, and then you can work with it from there. It's a good thing, I think. I will call before this weekend.

I got my packing pretty much done, for the best trip yet. I'm excited, I'm (slightly) nervous, I'm exhillerated, I'm flabbergasted, I'm explaining to my dad that I'm going (he hadn't heard, poor dad, lmgo), I'm THRILLED.

Isn't it funny how things change in a short amount of time? Your priorities change and suddenly you realize that you may have fucked up in the past and that you need to do something about it. It helps a lot when you discover you aren't the only one that has done something like this and yours isn't nearly as bad as the last guy they talked to. It makes you feel better, in a way.

Taking charge of that kind of thing is a big step. Once you do that and you understand that taking care of this dark blot on your credit will help you out in the future, you're part of the way there. It seems like maybe we are both doing something to better ourselves at the same time, just in different ways. It's a good feeling to know that you're doing the right thing, sometimes.
